Even though Russia was gone, the other Allies did not give up until they defeated the Central Powers on November 11, 1918. The Treaty of Versailles, which “economically speaking,” Huxley felt “was a thoroughly bad peace” (Bedford, 330), officially marked the end of the war. It treated the Germans harshly, making them bitter and eager for revenge. During the war years, writers reflected bleak feelings of despair, as seen in such works as Dubliners (1914) and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) by James Joyce, a very famous writer Huxley did not admire, although he admitted in 1938 that “even his unintelligible things read musically” (Murray, 315), and Prufrock and Other Observations (1917) by T.

But the British refused to be beaten. They alone fought against Germany until the war became a worldwide conflict in 1941, when the Soviet Union joined the Allies after being invaded by Germany and when the United States declared war after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7. Angry at the unjust attack, the Americans committed themselves to the war effort. Sixteen million American men and women served in the armed forces, many of them volunteering for duty. To start a western assault on the Nazis, the American and British forces landed in Normandy, France, on D-day, June 6, 1944.

Henry Ford’s assembly-line process, which he put in place in 1913, produced affordable cars, making it possible for Huxley and Maria to buy their first car when they moved to Italy. Airplanes also improved, and in 1927 Charles Lindbergh flew solo across the Atlantic. Other scientific advances also contributed to people’s well-being. Millions of families had new household appliances, such as electric refrigerators, electric washing machines, and vacuum cleaners (Freidel, 260). People were entertained by radios in their homes, and they had quick access to just about any person by telephone.
